Understanding RTP

Return to Player explained without marketing fluff: long-run average, sample variance, and how to read published percentages.

~7 min readUpdated 2026-08-06

Definition

RTP is the theoretical percentage of wagered money a game returns to players over an infinite horizon under its model. A 99% RTP game returns $99 per $100 wagered on average — not per session.

Misconceptions

RTP is not a guarantee for 100 spins.

Two games with identical RTP can feel completely different if variance differs.
